One Million Life-Changing Books…For Free

In early 2010, Tim and I met to discuss the long-term strategy of How to be Rich and Happy. Feedback on the book was blowing us away (in a good way- think “best book I’ve ever read” type good way) and the material was having the positive impact on people we both intended and hoped for.

In other words, all was going fantastic.

So we decided to up the ante on ourselves.

We started asking crazy questions like what would it take to get us over the top excited for 2010? What could we do that would be so ridiculously cool not only would we be digging it, but so would lots of other people too?

What would do all of that, and in the spirit of the book, would also make a HUGE difference in the lives of lots of people?

And we liked the energy behind those questions.

So in a moment of tremendous clarity, or insanity, or something in between, we decided. Let’s partner with the world to give away one million copies of How to be Rich and Happy to people in need.

After all, we didn’t invent the Rich and Happy formula described in the book. We just documented it based on our findings over the last twenty years. And while documenting it was fun, sharing it is even better.

Yes the logistics of giving away a million copies seemed daunting. Yes there were obviously huge hurdles. And yes, there were lots of reasons why this looked impossible. In other words, it was the kind of challenge that gets us excited.

We came up with a core group of people that we most want to get the manual into the hands of:

• Young people between 15-20 years old
• Single parents on income support
• Unemployed people
• Homeless people
• People recovering from illness or injury

Why those people? Because we think those are the people who REALLY would get a life boost from some insights into the Rich and Happy formula AND who otherwise probably wouldn’t have access to it.

So we put the word out there, and within hours people were offering to help. They provided great ideas and they came forward with the names of charities who would be good partners. They started putting the word out into the websphere, encouraging people to buy a copy of the book (90% of the proceeds from each sale go directly to fund the giveaway efforts).

And within eight weeks we were already giving copies away.

Interview us or write about the project for your media outlet, or own blog or website. Send us your ideas for achieving this goal, no matter how off-the-wall or unusual you think they are.

Think six degrees of separation. Who do you know that might know somebody that might know someone who can help? Please forward this info to them. The person could work in the media or the charitable or distribution sectors. Who would ship for free? If you have a spare million dollars lying around let us know. We’ll let you fund the whole thing and even put your name on the cover.
