How To Guarantee Failure

You may have noticed from the counter in the right hand sidebar that we finally made the $100,000 barrier of copies of How To Be Rich and Happy given away to good causes. It has been a struggle at times and not all plain sailing as the last post explained, but we made it with a couple of weeks to spare.

Although the main goal is to giveaway 1,000,000 copies of the book, the sub-goal for this year was to get to the $100k mark and use that to generate some publicity and as a launch pad into 2011. So thanks for helping us make it happen, now if you just have a spare million bucks lying around that can speed things up a bit, that would be nice.

Thanks for Stealing From A Charity

OK, so the first time it happened it was sort of funny.  I posted a while back that as part of our goal of gifting a million copies of How to be Rich and Happy to people in need, we had donated some to a silent auction.  And of all the items up for auction, including expensive golf clubs, artwork… the only thing stolen was copies of How to be Rich and Happy.

So here we are approaching the holidays, and wouldn’t you know it, it’s happened again!  This time though it’s not as funny.  We shipped a case of books up to North Kent Community Services, up in Rockford, Michigan.  It’s a great charity involved with making a difference through things like seniors meals on wheels, providing food to families in need, emergency assistance to help people get back on their feet…

Turning Criticism Into Feedback

Every person that has ever walked on this planet has been criticized at some stage. In fact most ‘ordinary’ people will be criticized hundreds, or more likely, thousands of times during their life time. It gets even worse if you join the ranks of the visibly super-successful, then there will even be people waiting to criticize you that have never even met you.

The difference between Rich and Happy people and those stuck in the poor and miserable mindset can often be seen through their attitude toward criticism.

Just Add Water

I have no idea why, but this past spring I was struck with the gardening urge.

I’m a big fan of fresh basil, so I went to the garden expert at the Lowes near my house and asked what it took to grow basil. He explained it was so simple to grow, that anyone could do it.

Dealing With Negative Emotions

I wasn’t feeling very Rich and Happy. In fact I was feeling pretty damn poor and miserable if truth be told.

My wife’s car had been making a strange rattling noise for a few weeks and we’d held off taking it in until it needed a service. It didn’t seem that serious so why make the trek across town twice in the space of a couple of months?

Are Your Anchors Heavy or Light?

The other day I was getting ready to head out on a week long speaking tour. I had just finished the book I was reading and so I went to my bookshelf and started scanning for something to take with me.

I often pick up books at garage sales and in used book stores and throw them on the shelves, with the expectation that at some point, I’ll get to them.

Rich and Happy Talk

Rich and happy people don’t say “I can’t do that” they say,

“I haven’t been able to do that until now”

Do You Believe You Can Be Rich and Happy?

About 3 years ago I was at a party in Tampa when I was approached by a couple keen to talk to me. They’d heard I was a life coach and wondered if I could help them with their daughter.

She’d been having school problems and though she was above average (isn’t every kid above average? Seriously, I don’t think I have ever heard a parent say to me – “Well ya know my kids are a bit slower than the rest, but I still love them!”), they couldn’t get her to read books.

A Shortcut To Feeling Rich and Happy

I’m sure you know that one of the most powerful positive emotions known to man is gratitude. The human brain is so poor at holding two contradictory thoughts that the moment you throw a sense of gratitude into the mix it’s really difficult to feel all of those nasty negative emotions that may have previously been loitering in the nether regions of your mind.

In the exceptional book Authentic Happiness, Martin Seligman talks about an exercise designed to move us into a sense of gratitude which in turn leads to feeling happier. Seligman suggests that every now and then we should say thanks to people we are grateful for, but may not know of our gratitude.
